MYP MATH PROGRAMME

Students aged 11 to 16 are enrolled in the MYP Programme in which IB students “learn how to learn”. Students who seek an MYP math certificate may take a two-hour on-screen examination while carrying out a mid-level personal project and completing community service.
Math IB is presented at two levels: standard and extended. (The curriculum has just recently been changed, and teachers are still preparing the proper materials, but in general the subjects summarized below are covered)

MYP mathematics (1 through 5 (pre-diploma)) consists of four branches of math that include:

Four basic operations for whole numbers, integers, decimals and fractions, number lines, rounding, …

2. ALGEBRA

building expressions, simplifying expressions, expansion rules, solving equations, linear inequalities, factorization, rational equations, …

3. GEOMETRY & TRIGONOMETRY

angles, lines, parallels and perpendicular lines, parallelism, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, circles, 3D objects, coordinate geometry, trigonometric ratios, sine and cosine rules, solving a triangle, …

4. STATISTICS & PROBABILITY

samples and populations, dot tables, tally and frequency tables, column graphs, pie charts, plots, mean, median, mode and range, experimental probability, Venn diagram, probability of two-way table, multiplying probabilities and compound events…

The new HL pre-diploma curriculum covers most of the DP Math 11 SL topics. MYP requires 50-70 hours of teaching time depending on the level.

For completing the course students need to complete an end-of-term on-screen examination.  The students in MYP math are assessed on a scale from 1 to 8 according to the following four criteria: “knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, applying mathematics in real-life contexts”
The questions for the past years of MYP e-assessment are not released.  However, some books like “IB MYP by Concept” have some examples and teach the methods of how to approach these kinds of questions.

The IB Diploma Programme has a wide range of math courses that according to students’ goals and capabilities may be taken. That being said, not all of them are presented in all schools, especially the schools that are not exclusively IB.

These subjects include IB Mathematics Studies SL , Math SL, Math HL, and Further Mathematics HL that very few students take, and that is one of the reasons (besides cost) why it is not even presented in most schools. Right now around 5 students in Mulgrave are taking Further Mathematics HL.

1. IB MATHEMATICS STUDIES, SL​

This subject will be the  least academically demanding among the four courses. Mathematics Studies is more suitable for students who do not wish to take mathematics as an essential part of their studies at university like law, psychology, languages and so on. Students who need to take math as a major component of their studies like engineering or sciences must take Math SL or HL for their credits to be counted. Mathematics Studies is not accepted as credits at some universities for some majors like engineering.

Math SL is more suitable for students who are interested in math and expect to have a sound and thorough knowledge of math in their future studies. Most schools only offer IB Math SL and IB Math HL in their programs.
Recommended teaching hours for Math HL are 240 vs 150 for Maths SL and mathematics studies SL.

3. IB MATHEMATICS HL

Students who anticipate mathematics as a major component of their university studies should take Math HL. IB recommends it if you are aiming for math, engineering, physics and economics majors.

The minimum recommended teaching hours for IB Math HL is 240 hours; 182 hours for the core content, 48 hours for one of the options, 10 hours for the IA. The details are in the following table.

So, the students have 60% more teaching hours in Math HL than Math SL. If the degree you want to pursue does not prefer HL and it won’t be a bonus, taking HL over SL is not recommended because of the sheer number of hours you must put into it in comparison with Math SL.
The assessment also has one more section (Paper 3) that for the most part is based on extended options. The details of the exam are as follows:

4. Further Mathematics HL (FMHL)

Further Mathematics HL is an intense course designed for students with a very strong background and interest in math. Students can take FMHL alongside Math HL.
Students cover 5 subjects in a total of 240 hours, and they write two 2.5 hrs long exam papers with no Internal Assessment since they need to take Math HL anyways.
